Annamalai slams DMK government for transporting medicines in garbage truck

Chennai, October 2025: Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has launched a sharp attack on the DMK government, alleging gross negligence and mismanagement after visuals surfaced showing medical supplies being transported in a garbage truck. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, raising concerns about the state’s handling of essential medicines meant for public healthcare.

Viral Video Sparks Controversy

The controversy erupted after a video went viral on social media showing a large quantity of government-supplied medicines being carried in a vehicle typically used for waste collection. The footage, reportedly shot in one of the state-run health department zones, quickly drew public criticism and prompted opposition leaders to demand accountability.

Annamalai took to the media to condemn the government’s actions, describing the incident as a “symbol of DMK’s administrative decay.” He questioned how medicines intended for the poor could be handled with such disregard for hygiene and safety.

Annamalai’s Strong Reaction

In his statement, Annamalai accused the DMK-led government of turning Tamil Nadu’s once-admired healthcare system into a “bureaucratic mess riddled with corruption and carelessness.”

“Medicines meant to save lives are being treated like garbage. This shows the DMK government’s complete lack of respect for public health. The Chief Minister must take moral responsibility,” Annamalai said.

He also demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident, urging that strict action be taken against officials responsible for the mishandling of the medicines.

DMK Government Responds

Following the outrage, health department officials clarified that the medicines were being shifted for disposal as they were expired or damaged, not distributed for use. The department maintained that the truck was not meant for general garbage but repurposed for logistical reasons.

However, opposition leaders dismissed the explanation, insisting that expired medical waste should be handled under strict biomedical disposal rules, not in open garbage trucks, which could pose environmental and public health risks.

Political Fallout

The issue has added fuel to the ongoing political battle between the BJP and DMK in Tamil Nadu. With state elections approaching in 2026, Annamalai has been intensifying his attacks on the ruling party, accusing it of corruption, negligence, and misplaced priorities.
