In a landmark move, the Supreme Court of India has formally introduced a reservation policy for its employees, offering Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) quota benefits in both direct recruitment and promotional appointments.

The policy, effective from June 23, 2025, was officially communicated through an internal circular dated June 24. The court’s internal platform, Supnet, has been updated with the Model Reservation Roster and Register for reference.
According to the newly adopted framework, SC employees will receive a 15% reservation, while ST employees will be entitled to 7.5%, specifically for internal promotions and direct appointments across several key roles.
The reservation benefits will be applicable to positions such as:
Registrars
Senior Personal Assistants
Assistant Librarians
Junior Court Assistants
Chamber Attendants
The Registrar (Recruitment) has been designated to address any objections or discrepancies raised by staff members regarding entries in the reservation roster or register.
This is the first time the apex court has implemented an institutional reservation policy for its non-judicial staff. The move aligns the administrative wing of the Supreme Court with government-backed diversity and inclusion standards observed in public sector institutions across the country.
Legal experts see this decision as a step toward greater social equity within the judiciary’s internal functioning, emphasizing transparency and representation in administrative processes.
